| K9 Vader is a 3 year old GSD, whelped in Holland June 13th 2008. He began his service with SLCPD in September of 2009, he first certified as a narcotics detector dog in October 2009 and certified in patrol in January 2010. He certified DPO1 patrol standard in November 2010. |

We decided to replace him because he had unusual weight gain and issues with slick floors, meaning he struggled with energy and searching buildings with slick floors. After we got the new dog we discovered Vader had a thyroid problem, medication ($20 for 6 months) has fixed this problem and his weight and energy are back to normal. He still has slick floor issues, but they are not as bad due to increased energy.
He won 3rd place top dog at the last UPOA K9 trial, so he has a ton of training on board and would be great for an agency that needs a good narcotics dog and a dog for tracking and area searching. He will search buildings, he has had 2 bites of suspects in buildings, but it’s definitely not his strong suit. Had we discovered the thyroid problem earlier we may have decided to keep him, as he is solid in all other areas.. |
